The Experienced College Coach

These are the coaches who have been to the NFL before and know what to expect. Some of these names are guys like Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh, Lovie Smith, and Les Miles. College coaches with NFL experience all fall into this category.

All of these coaches above have been in the NFL at some level. Les Miles was a tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys from 1998-2000, so I don’t just mean head coaches.

These coaches are the ones many name when the question of successful college coaches in the NFL is answered. Pete Carroll is usually the name thrown around for this type of coach. They have been in the NFL, went to college, and came back to take a team in the NFL again. There are not a ton of these, but they can be found here and there.

The benefit to this style of coach is they know what the NFL is and what to expect. They understand how a team, players, and NFL scheme work. They have been around to see how an NFL workweek looks and how it is constructed. They can build a staff with both college and pro coaches as they have worked with both.

The downside is they may be stuck in their scheme, style, and ways. There may not be a ton in originality as they tend to stick with what has worked for them. If they have refuse to adapt to the changes at the pro level, they will fall flat. Many of them had complete and utter control at their college and will essentially be giving up a lot of that with the NFL owner and GM. This can lead to a clash between front office and head coach. This was what did Nick Saban in.
