The Retread

These are coaches who have been a head coach recently or their last job was as a head coach and are either currently looking for work or will be soon. These names range from Dan Quinn to Chuck Pagano. These are not guys that have been out of the league for a while, but have been a head coach once, twice, or more at various locations. This could also be a current head coach like Dan Quinn who could be looking for a job at the end of the season.

The positives are that these coaches have been there. They know the job inside and out. They can build a staff quickly, know how to work an NFL season and what is expected of them. They have a lot of experience and have seen the NFL change and adapt for a while. They may have learned from past mistakes and are looking for either a change in scenery or another shot to prove their last team wrong.

The downside is many of these have not done well to stay a head coach. They have been a part of a losing team and was not able to turn it around. Many of them are stuck in their scheme and style and are not willing to change a lot, especially if they have had any success. Depending on where they were they may not have been in a winning culture for a little while.

The Longshots

I am lumping two types of coach here. Legends and big-time coaches, fall here. Bill Cowher and Jimmy Johnson are the legends, while Bill Belichick, Sean Payton, and Mike Tomlin fall here as big-timers. Current or past Super Bowl winning coaches who seem either entrenched at their current location or are longshots to be hired.

The upside is these guys have been to the top of the league. They know exactly how to win the Super Bowl and know the league extremely well. They understand exactly what is expected and how to adjust to the league in ways many coaches never get to. They tend to stick around a place for a long time, are successful, and can usually correct a team if it is down.

The negatives are they are expensive and demand a lot of control. They have been the best and expect to be treated as such. If the coach is still coaching, trading valuable draft picks are required to pull them from their current job. They will want a lot of control over the draft, players, and staff to where they can override the GM.

Big name coaches in the NFL are hard to come by and even harder to get from other teams. Many retire and head into the booth as an analyst or as a GM with a team. If they have been retired for a while it is possible the game has past them by, but the name alone is enough to warrant eyes.

Conclusion

No matter the flavor of coach anyone wants, each comes with positives and negatives. The truth is, no one knows exactly what will happen. If we did then there would be a ton of Super Bowl winning coaches and bad teams wouldn’t exist like they do now. There is also personalities that have to be considered and time allowed for the coach to become whoever they will be.

More from Dallas Cowboys

In the coming months there will be a ton of names thrown around for the Dallas Cowboys. Keep in mind that there is no absolute right or wrong answer to who you should support, just know there will be discussion, agreement, and disagreement with each name thrown out. It is up to Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones to decide which direction they want to go.

Unless the Dallas Cowboys end up somehow winning the Super Bowl, odds are they will be in the market for a new head coach. What we can agree on is the Cowboys need to do their due diligence and consider all options. Don’t just jump at a name or a coach without looking at all available options. As we see, there is a lot to consider.
