The Encouraging Dallas Mavericks

The 2018-2019 season was quite a time for MFFLs everywhere. It was 14 time All-Star Dirk Nowitzki‘s final season in the league. The creativity of rookie of the year Luka Doncic re-energized the American Airlines Center and the trade for All-Star power forward Kristaps Porzingis brought some fans nostalgia of the Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki dynamic duo.

Yet even with all the transactions the rest of the league overlooked the team. The Lakers traded for All-Star Anthony Davis, 2-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard left Toronto and moved to his home state in order to team up with MVP finalist Paul George in LA after he was traded from Oklahoma City.

Other teams like Miami, Boston, Philadelphia, and Houston made some splash signings by obtaining the services of Jimmy Butler, Kemba Walker, Al Horford, and Russell Westbrook respectively. Even the Utah Jazz made more noise by trading for Mike Conley and signing scoring small forward Bojan Bogdanovic.

The Western Conference was looking more competitive than ever and the Mavericks looked over matched even after their series of transactions. 24 games into the season, the Mavericks have held their ground and are playing some of the best basketball in the league.

How have the Mavericks ended up here?
