Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks: A Tale of Two Teams
Not drive the hype machine
This is definitely harder for the Cowboys as they are the most valuable brand in all of sports, but a lot of this is within their control.
Whenever a player says something the slightest bit noteworthy, the media will react. While these blurbs are fun to listen on some occasions, they aren’t fun when the team is losing. Sometimes being quiet can go a long way.
The Cowboys drew a lot of hype speaking so boldly of the team and the coaching staff. Calling Dak Prescott a hybrid of Jared Goff and Cam Newton will draw confusion. (he’s been better than both) Tweeting that giving a quarterback money means more reasons to sack them will draw laughter when you have yet to record a sack on that quarterback. Saying your offensive coordinator is your version of “Sean McVay” sets a ridiculous standard to abide by.

The Mavericks this offseason were quiet. We knew Luka Doncic was making efforts to get leaner, but he wasn’t showcasing it to the world. We knew Kristaps Porzingis was looking to fill into his frame and a quick picture confirmed that. Trips to Miami were not highly publicized.
Once again, it is a lot easier to stay quiet as the second biggest sports franchise in a sports-riddled city, but that didn’t stop the Mavericks from doing it. This is considering that there was every reason for extended buzz in Dallas. Doncic was coming off of a stellar rookie season, Porzingis was making his presence in Dallas, and the team was building a playoff contender for the rest of the NBA to see in one of the biggest sports markets in the US while playing under one of the most popular owners in the league.
This team spent the time talking smack to the rest of the league with each other or doing something constructive. They encouraged each other without making unnecessary comparisons or saying something extreme to draw attention. That is what team chemistry is all about. The collective understanding that as a group your play is a larger voice than any individual star’s voice.
The Dallas Cowboys clearly have a way to go before they can lift the Lombardi trophy again. The Mavericks might be closer to lifting the Larry O’Brien, and for that reason, it might be time for the Joneses to take a page out of Mark Cuban and Rick Carlisle’s book. For the Cowboys, things need to change. For the Mavericks, things are only getting started.
