Grant Delpit – Safety – LSU

Delpit is probably the top safety in the draft and should be around close to when the Cowboys pick. The top four safeties look great, then the drop-off starts in this class. Delpit, Xavier McKinney, Ashtyn Davis, and a healthy Hamsah Nasirildeen are the top. Davis and Hamsah might be second round picks, but could sneak into the first round. Hamsah has an injury and could drop. But Delpit is the guy here.

Watching Delpit it is hard to find a lot of flaws in his game. He tracks the ball well, has good ball skills, and sees everything in front of him so well and plays downhill quickly and hard as he diagnoses things. When asked to blitz he hits holes hard and is quite capable to get home quickly. He isn’t the best tackler, but is more than willing to get his nose in and wrap someone up.

Delpit will need some work on diagnosing NFL offenses, but should be able to adjust quickly. The only downfalls to Delpit is sometimes his tackling ends up in a whiff and he short arms the tackle. The other small thing is he is not the best man coverage guy. He looks to have the skills to fix these two things, but they are the only real knocks I, or anyone, has really found.

Delpit is a starting safety, day one. His ball skills alone should help the Cowboys with their issues with creating turnovers and while he isn’t the best man cover guy, isn’t the biggest liability. He is the type of safety who can control the defense, something the Cowboys haven’t really had in a while.
