Dallas Cowboys: Blame Jerry Jones for this mediocre team
By Dink Kearney
The Dallas Cowboys lost another must win game to a lesser opponent. However, the Cowboys inconsistency is because of one man, and one man only.
The Dallas Cowboys are the epitome of inconsistency, doesn’t play up their potential, plays down to their competition, is always out coached, and is a symbol of frustration for Cowboys Nation.
The loss to the evil and talentless Philadelphia Eagles proves the inconsistency of the Cowboys. Not only does it proves the Cowboys woes this season, it illustrates two plus decades of inconsistency.
To put this into perspective ( and for this season alone), the Cowboys whipped the surging Los Angeles Rams 44-21 the week before their fateful loss to the Eagles. The Rams are a more talented team than the Eagles, have better coaching, and are the defending NFC Champs who played in last season’s Super Bowl.
So with the Cowboys being the far superior team, and the Eagles playing with practice squad players, it was a given the Cowboys would win that game, even it was close. We know that didn’t happen because of poor play, ineffective play calling, a terrible defense, and inept coaching.
But the loss to Philly goes beyond Jason Garrett‘s being an average coach or why Dak Prescott played with a bum shoulder. The loss to the Eagles just shows you that the Cowboys are a mediocre organization because of Jerry Jones being a mediocre owner and general manager.
Yep, ole Jerral Wayne Jones may have the most valued sports franchise on the planet, but his meddling ways and being the star of the Cowboys is the reason why his team won’t make the playoffs, and why this team hasn’t played in an NFC championship game since the end of the 1995 season-when former President Bill Clinton was in office.
If Jerry hires another “yes man” or a coach with no backbone, you’ll see the same results until Ole Jerry retires. Being a $5 billion dollar franchise with inconsistency and no Super Bowl win in 25 years says more about Jerry than any coach he’s ever hired.
In 1995 I was still in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division and I had a full head of hair. Now I’m 47 years young, sporting a full gray goatee, and bald headed with a house full of children. I feel like each year will be the year for my beloved Cowboys, but I’m just a foolish for believing it.
For a storied franchise like Dallas, there’s no excuse for this level of mediocrity and there’s no one to blame but Jerry. The camera and spotlight begins and ends with Jerry giving updates about the team as if he’s the head coach, offensive/defensive coordinator, and plays on both sides of the ball.
On paper, Dallas had one of the most talented teams in the NFL-especially on offense. Dallas’ defense was a top-10 unit from last season, and is now a shell of itself.
There’s no reason why this team is 7-8 and on the outside looking in to make the playoffs. Even the critics said that’s is the most talented Dallas team since its hey day in 1990’s.
But Dallas is in this situation because Jerry refuses to hire a bona fide coach who can take this team to a Super Bowl. Jerry wants a yes man or a coach who claps a lot and has no problem taking a back seat him.
A more competent coach would have Dallas playing with at best a 14-1 record or at worse an 11-4 record, and I’m being most with the 11-4 record.
A good owner gets out of the way and hires the best coach to win a Super Bowl. Period. I don’t care how famous an owner is, but that owner will hire the best man for the job. It’s really that simple.
Look at other owners in other sports.
The late owner George Steinbrenner of the New York Yankees used to be a meddling owner just like Jerry, but Steinbrenner learned from the error of his ways and allowed the baseball people in his organization to make the baseball decisions, and the Yankees won four World Series in a five year span, appeared in several others, and won its last one in 2009.

Plus, it put several of players in baseball’s Hall of Fame.
Believe it or not, Steinbrenner was worse than Jerry. In 1990, MLB even banned Steinbrenner permanently from day-to-day operations (but not ownership) for paying a gambler $40,000 to dig up dirt on Hall of Famer Dave Winfield. Steinbrenner would be reinstated in 1993. Jerry’s bad but not that bad.
What’s so frustrating is that Jerry has the money to hire the best coach in football to coach this ultra-talented team. All Jerry has to to do is get out of the way and let a really good coach coach his team.
If Jerry hires another “yes man” or a coach with no backbone, you’ll see the same results until Ole Jerry retires. Being a $5 billion dollar franchise with inconsistency and no Super Bowl win in 25 years says more about Jerry than any coach he’s ever hired.
As site expert Reid Hanson so eloquently stated in his article, can we get a new head coach? Maybe he’ll be just as stubborn as Jerry but can win us a Super Bowl at the same time and stop this cycle of mediocrity.
