The Dallas Cowboys keep Jon Kitna as QB coach

This wish speaks for itself. Kitna has helped quarterback Dak Prescott turn the corner in his development. While Prescott has thrown 11 interceptions, he’s also thrown the most touchdowns, yards, attempts, and yards per attempt in a single season. Prescott is averaging over 306 yards per game, which would be the most by a Cowboys QB in franchise history.

The aggression is evident in Prescott’s play as it has resulted in a lot of good as well as some bad. He started off the year extremely hot throwing for 8 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. That rate slowed down the next three games but the play of Prescott took the Cowboys offense to the next level. Even in losing efforts, Prescott has done the dirty work. Against the Minnesota Vikings Prescott was very close to helping the team pull out a comeback victory. Against the Patriots, the team drove down the field in the fourth quarter only to kick a field goal down seven points.

Of course, there are his bad performances. Namely against the Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, Chicago Bears, and recently the Philadelphia Eagles. The end of November and December have not been kind to Prescott this season but sometimes the luck runs out. The Cowboys have not had the luck of yesteryear.

So with all the tape on file for Prescott this year, who better to help him go over it and develop him than the coach who’s had the greatest effect on his play? The Kitna hiring made sense from the beginning and the re-signing of Kitna would also make sense. Kitna was instrumental in controlling the aggression of Tony Romo in his time as the Cowboys signal caller. Another year with Prescott and the Cowboys could have themselves an MVP level quarterback, or so we hope.

The re-signing of Kitna is also dependent upon the contract situation of Prescott. The expectation is Prescott re-signs with the team at a price point nearing Russell Wilson‘s contract. Allowing him to develop another year with Kitna would allow the Cowboys to get their money’s worth out of Prescott.
