Javon Kinlaw – Defensive Tackle – South Carolina

If you read my five names to watch article you would already know my take on Kinlaw. I think the way the draft fell, Kinlaw is the best pick. Grant Delpit and Xavier McKinney were gone at safety, Derrick Brown and Raekwon Davis were already picked, and I just don’t think the Cowboys will go wide receiver in the first. So Kinlaw being there made total sense.

Kinlaw is agile and fast for a defensive tackle. He collapses pockets with his speed and strength. His height allows him to get into passing lanes, and watching him, he loves to get his hands up and knock down passes. Teams have to double him or he can wreck a gameplan over the course of a game. He holds the point well in the run game and stacks and sheds blocks really well. His first step might be the best in this draft for a defensive tackle. He is a little bit of a hybrid and not a true 1-tech, but his skill is so high, you can’t let him pass if he is there. He is a three down defensive tackle, fantastic in a one-gap scheme, but has all the tools to thrive in a two-gap scheme.

Where Kinlaw needs some work is his pad level. Standing at 6’6″, he sometimes gets too high, especially when he is double teamed. Every once in a while his motor will slow down if he is taken out of a game by an offense scheming for him. But at the pro level he would benefit from another threat on the defensive line. His bend is average, but if kept at defensive tackle, shouldn’t be a big issue.

Other Names: Tee Higgins, Trevon Diggs, and K’Lavon Chaisson. Higgins is a WR who can play all positions, but this draft is so deep at WR. Diggs is a fantastic cornerback and depending on what the Cowboys do could be a great pick. Chaisson is a defensive end who can pass rush with the best of them.
