Dallas Cowboys: Top-5 Free Agent Safeties to target
By Reid Hanson
Adrian Phillips, FS
Adrian Phillips, is another young and exciting player hitting the market this winter. The 28-year-old Charger is coming off what many consider his best season to-date. Unfortunately, it’s a season that only spanned seven games.
Based on his 282 snaps played, Pro Football Focus graded him as the NFL’s 5th rated safety last season. His 87.3 coverage rating and 78.3 run rating place him elite company and two spots above Dallas Cowboys fan favorite, Jamal Adams.

The thing that makes Phillips so interesting is his potential value. 2019 was his top rated season but since he only played a few games it’s not going to carry a ton of weight. He could be a high value pick-up with major “boom” potential.
There are worse things the Cowboys could do than to invest in a potentially elite player in his prime. But for a player who up until now, never received a score over 72 (Perspective: last season Xavier Woods’ score was 73.2), there’s a gamble in signing a player like Phillips to a multi-year deal and it may be wise to offer a guaranteed 1-year prove-it deal loaded with incentives.
Tavon Wilson, SS
Tavon Wilson, 30, may be one of the better bargains on the market. The Detroit safety hasn’t been bad at anything, nor has he really excelled in anything either. He’s basically a nice fringe S2/S3 to replace Jeff Heath (which would still keep Dallas’ options open in the draft).
Wilson brings steady tackling and decent coverage. Again, he’s not the ideal answer at starting strong safety but he’s much better than the George Iloka signing last season and gives the Dallas Cowboys some freedom in the draft.
The good news is, there are a handful of other safeties potentially hitting the market this offseason so Dallas won’t be pressured into overspending on Day 1. But given the turnover in the secondary this season, they can’t really afford to sit back and be bargain hunters either. We know how that turns out.
