Be careful what you wish for Dallas Cowboys fans, Jason Garrett is gone but according to reports, the options to replace him are even worse.

Cowboys Nation has been demanding it and Jerry Jones has listened. Jason Garrett will not be retained as head coach and Dallas Cowboys are now actively looking for his replacement. That’s the good news.

The bad news, the list of reported candidates to replace him may be even worse. What’s that saying about “the devil you know?” According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Dallas Cowboys are focused on finding a new head coach with “extensive” head coaching experience. He followed that up by listing three head coaches who don’t exactly inspire confidence…

In fact, the coaches listed by Mort were dismissed from strikingly similar situations under strikingly similar circumstances. Marvin Lewis, Mike McCarthy, and Jeff Fisher (three coaches he listed in which the Dallas Cowboys have recently been speaking to) are all known for overstaying their welcome years beyond their “fresh by” date.

Marvin Lewis somehow retained his job in Cincinnati about a decade longer than he should have. In his 16-years he never won a playoff game. If Lewis was the stale bread, Jeff Fisher was the moldy bread. Sure, he has a Super Bowl appearance to his name but that achievement was seemingly a lifetime ago. He’s last been credited for holding an extremely talented Rams team back. Almost immediately after being replaced by Sean McVay, the Rams became a Super Bowl team.

Comparatively, Mike McCarthy looks like Tom Landry but even he isn’t without his warts. McCarthy is undergoing an image makeover here in recent days. After being unceremoniously let go from Green Bay at this time last year, the Super Bowl winning coach has put himself through a self-reflective boot camp.

More from Dallas Cowboys

His recent interview with Peter King paints a pretty nice picture. The softball questions posed as a job interview showed McCarthy as an evolving mind, up-to-date with the hottest trends and steeped in experience and success. I’ll expand more on this later this morning but as of now, it’s safe to say this coaching search is not going as planned.

Cowboys Nation always has lofty expectations. And it goes without saying those expectations were through the roof when everyone was collectively banging the table for Jason Garrett’s dismissal all season long.

The idea that we’ll be forced to live with and cheer for one of these unexciting options for the next 5+ seasons is nothing short of a nightmare.
