The Dallas Cowboys didn’t get much from the tight end position this past season and will most certainly look to improve this offseason. Here are five free agents who fit the bill…

The past two seasons have been a disaster at the tight end position for the Dallas Cowboys. In 2018, Jason Witten sprung an unforeseeable retirement upon the Cowboys org over draft weekend. Without time to adjust Dallas rolled into the season undermanned and without options.

In 2019 they welcomed the incomparable Witten back. Sadly, Witten was looking every bit his age (37) and once again the TE1 position was manned by a below average player. Now, TE2 Blake Jarwin flashed big play potential, but he was limited in blocking which ultimately led to him only averaging 27 snaps per game (half of what Witten received).

Whether Jason Witten decides to officially retire or not, it’s clear Dallas needs to do something at the tight end position this offseason. And considering Jarwin is in the last year of his deal and tight ends take time to develop, Dallas will likely need to address the position in the draft AND free agency.

So today we look at veteran tight ends who are slated to hit the market in March. Ideally the Dallas Cowboys need a TE to step in at TE1 on Day1. Whether he’s signed to man the post for one year or the foreseeable future remains to be seen, but a proven entity with a diverse skill-set is needed.

Adding Mike McCarthy as head coach only adds to the importance. McCarthy’s offense was at its best when he had Jermichael Finley balling at elite levels. McCarthy’s TE isn’t just a safety value but he’s a down the field threat and a red zone weapon.
