Dallas Cowboys: Top-5 Free Agent Cornerbacks to Target
By Reid Hanson
Kevin Johnson
Age: 28
PFF Rank: 26
Kevin Johnson, a former first round pick of the Houston Texans, has been a bust. But that doesn’t mean he’s without value. Playing on a one-year deal for the Bills last season, Johnson did fine. Targeted 44 times at a 59.1% completion percentage, he only allowed passers a 79.8 passer rating.
Playing a reserve role, Johnson stepped up and seemed to prove he has starter potential if put in the right situation. Could Dallas be that situation?

Possibly. Like most of the players on this list, he’s going to come cheap. I mean if Dallas wanted to do otherwise and invest in top-end talent, they’d keep Byron Jones after all. But Johnson has the raw skills to be able to be a starting CB in this league.
Maurice Canady
Age: 25
PFF Rank: 21
Another reserve who’s done ok with his limited opportunities is New York’s Maurice Canady. The former sixth rounder stands 6-foot-1 193lbs. He has a long reach and plus upper body strength. Best in zone, Canady is strong facing the QB and handling the run off the edge. He’s a physical all-around player who fits in some capacity with just about every team.
At just 25-years-old, Canady is the kind of young player Will McClay likes to take a shot on. He only allowed a 75% passer rating when targeted and held a missed tackle percentage of just 4.5% in 2019. He’s another good option to compete for a starting job that wouldn’t prevent a team from jumping on a CB early in the draft.
If the Dallas Cowboys want to save money at the CB position they would be wise to consider some of these options. If they want the best player they can find, they’d be wise to re-sign Jones and/or turn to the Draft. The truth is, there just aren’t a ton of great options in free agency this year.
