With draft season starting for the Dallas Cowboys and the rest of the NFL, here are some names to start watching as we get closer to the combine and then the draft.

Sure, the Super Bowl still needs to be played, but for thirty teams, to include the Dallas Cowboys, draft season is starting now. There are a few highlighted games for draft picks going on, which will lead us into the combine. Big boards are starting to be created, and before free agency starts, needs are being assessed. Let’s look at some positions the Cowboys have a need in and names they could use to fill them.

We will go position and names throughout the draft at each. Not all names will be here, but names that could be fits or names that could easily pop up. There are always some names that rise and fall, small school players to come out of the woodwork, and surprises. For now, let’s see what the position groups are looking like.

Safeties

There are currently four safeties that are considered top of this class. The dropoff from these four to the next few seems pretty steep right now. Those names are Grant Delpit, Xavier McKinney, Ashtyn Davis, and Antoine Winfield Jr. Those four are most likely to be picked in the first two rounds.

The next group of safeties all have some issues, K’Von Wallace, Alohi Gilman, Richie Grant, and Shyheim Carter are part of the next group. All of these have issues in coverage and while the Cowboys need a safety, they need someone who can tackle and has ball skills. This is a thin class in terms of coverage safeties and the Cowboys may decide to look in free agency or earlier in the draft.

There are some small school players that could make a name for themselves as the weeks go on. The lack of quality competition and top flight coaching usually cause these players to drop in the draft. Names like Kyle Duggar out of Lenoir-Rhyne and Jeremy Chinn out of Southern Illinois could be names to watch if they don’t invest early and want a sleeper type of guy.
