The Dallas Mavericks may feel the pressure to trade for a new frontcourt presence now that Dwight Powell’s out for the season. That would be a mistake.

Dwight Powell going down with a ruptured achilles has the Dallas Mavericks looking for another post player to bolster their thin front court. Because the Mavericks have few trade assets and little bargaining power, trading for a big, without upsetting the team chemistry, is unlikely.

The free agent market is probably the Dallas Mavericks best chance of trying to fill the void left by Powell going down. Recent reports link the Mavericks to veteran big man Joakim Noah. The 34-year-old Noah is currently a free agent after spending last season with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Joakim, a 13 year veteran, has seen his value fall over the past few years for two reasons: 1) injuries and 2) Offensive shortcomings. While he is limited on the offensive side of the ball, he’s more than adequate in every other element of the game. It’s also important  to keep in mind that Rick Carlisle‘s offense doesn’t call for the Center to be a dynamic scorer. Noah sets good screens, is a lobe threat, and a decent post player. That’s all that he’d be asked to do on offense.

Joakim Noah is exactly what the Dallas Mavericks need coming off their bench. The former Defensive Player of the Year is a respected defender, rebounder, and interior presence around the league. Noah is an old-fashioned big man. The type of player that’s nice to have in the  playoffs when it becomes a more half court slower game.

Noah’s the kind of player that you hate…unless he’s on your team, that is. Noah brings a toughness that the Mavericks are missing on defense. Most importantly the Mavericks don’t have to trade anyone to add Noah.

More from Dallas Mavericks

I understand that this might not be the most popular option, I’m just not a fan of tampering with team chemistry at this point. The Dallas Mavericks don’t have the assets to acquire a player that would make them contenders this year. So I don’t see the Mavericks front office rushing this process with a trade after showing so much promise so early.

The last time the Mavericks made a trade while having the number one ranked offense was the Rajon Rondo trade. The connection between the two events makes me nervous. Let’s just play it safe no need to panic.

It may not be a popular take but Dallas is better off signing Joakim Noah than they are trading for a Dwight Powell replacement.
