Dallas Cowboys: Some Final Takeaways from the Super Bowl
Dallas Cowboys Offense
One of the current lines of thought throughout the fans of the Cowboys is that they need to invest in a wide receiver or two this off-season. The investment, however, isn’t looking for speed and depth in the third or fourth round kind of investment. It also isn’t the get a guy who can kick return and play the slot. No, the investment some want is a wide receiver in the first round, and probably one in free agency or later in the draft as well. Forgo the defense and try to put up as many points as you can.
The issue with this philosophy is this may work in college against lesser competition, but in the NFL the league is just vastly faster, stronger, and smarter. The 49ers held the Chiefs offense to keep the game close. Had San Francisco not got away from the run, the outcome of the game may have not been the same. The powerful Chiefs offense, needed their defense to make a stop or get the ball back.
However, there is still things to learn for the Cowboys. Motion and design are extremely important in this day and age of the NFL. Even the extremely run heavy 49ers offense used motion and design of open running lanes for a cast-off running back and a young receiver. The Chiefs used motion and design often to get receivers open and in space.
Another takeaway would be the Cowboys need to open up their tight-ends more. Fans complained when Blake Jarwin didn’t get enough playing time, that needs to change. The Cowboys could potentially get another tight end in the draft, but using them will be the key.
The Cowboys will most likely add to both the tight end and wide receiver positions. Every team could use to increase offensive line depth, but as the Super Bowl showed us, it all comes down to fitting the scheme around the players, not the other way around.
