Dallas Cowboys Special Teams

If there was one thing the Cowboys lacked this year above everything else, it was good special teams play. As the only team in the league with less than 500 total return yards and one of the worst starting positions in the league, the special teams need a massive change in both philosophy and talent.

Kai Forbath came in and helped the kicking game, but it is evident the Cowboys either need to resign him or invest a little in a quality kicker. If we add in the downturn of Chris Jones, the entire kicking game needs to be better.

Watching the Super Bowl the teams trusted their kickers, completely trusted their returners, and saw them as a vital part to the Super Bowl chance to win. The change in coaching and what looks like a large churning of the roster in the middle and bottom depth, the special teams should improve. However, the Cowboys have to invest something, anything.

Starts With McCarthy

All of the changes start with the coaching change. Mike McCarthy has started the purge of the old philosophies, with a few exceptions. If he can work with Will McClay and the Joneses to infuse the roster with talent there should be changes fairly quickly.

Over the next few months we will see where McCarthy and his staff stand on some of the players that were already on the roster. With a lot of contract decisions there could be a larger roster churn than expected. However, there could also be less than some feel as well.

The answer to what the Cowboys learned and need after the Super Bowl probably falls somewhere among needing to fix the defense, while adding depth and speed to the offense, and giving the special teams a boost. We all can agree 2019 was a lost season for a lot of different reasons, but 2020 is already looking up.
