Defensive Needs for the Dallas Cowboys

This list will seem like there needs to be an upgrade everywhere, and while that is half true, internal free agents, player development, and scheme will probably help some of the potential issues here. Every position group could use more talent.

Defensive Line

Depending on how the new coaching staff sees defensive tackle, we could finally see a big-body on the front for the Cowboys. They certainly need more run support and pressure on the defensive line and defensive tackle has been an issue for several seasons now. If the Cowboys let Robert Quinn walk, they could add two players on the defensive line to help generate pressure and help their run defense.

Linebackers

Sean Lee said he wants to return, but even if he were to come back, Justin March and Joe Thomas are both free agents. With a potential hybrid 4-3/3-4 this season, linebackers are probably going to be in high demand. Rotational depth at the minimum is something to be addressed and while they have guys they can bring back, if they let them walk, it becomes a bigger need.

Need rating: Low to Mid

Cornerbacks

This group hinges on what the Cowboys do with Byron Jones. If they do let him walk, the corner situation becomes a big need. If they also let Anthony Brown walk then corner may be one of the biggest needs of the off-season. No Jones and Brown would leave Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, and Deante Burton/Donovan Olumba as your top three corners. With the struggles in coverage Awuzie and Lewis had, even with an upgraded pass rush, you can’t feel good about the corners.

Need rating: Mid to High

Safeties

Everyone knows this is a need, it has been a need. Heath, Frazier, and Thompson are all free agents, That leaves Wilson and Woods as your two safeties, with little to nothing behind them. This is a huge need and even if the Cowboys bring back everyone, this is a position that has needed help. Easily one of the biggest needs for this team.
