Round 2

Antoine Winfield Jr.

S, Minnesota

Antoine Winfield Jr is everyone’s favorite safety. The son the identically named senior, Winfield is a smart and talented safety with a nose for the football. As this season’s Darnell Savage, draft twitter is ga-ga for him with virtually every fan base after him. As such, it’s possible he won’t even make it to Dallas in the second round and Dallas will have to move up if they want a shot at him.

But with that warning issued, there’s also a decent shot he falls a bit. Winfield is not a physical freak or a burner. His best attributes are shown on the film, not on the track. Therefore the NFL Combine won’t do him many favors.

But Winfield is a gamer – pure and simple. Last season he pulled in seven interceptions and three sacks for the Gophers. He’s not really a perfect free safety prospect (questions about his speed and range in a single high look) nor does he project as a pure strong safety in the pros. He’s basically a blend of the two which is kinda an underrated trait.

He can play in the box, he can man up on a tight end or slot, and he can sit back in 2-deep. We don’t know what type of coverages we’ll see in Year 1 of Mike Nolan but we know a versatile player like Winfield who can play everywhere helps Nolan disguise his intentions and keeps offenses guessing.
