In a wide receiver class with so much talent, some prospects’ stocks rise while others fall. Michael Pittman Jr has seen his stock rise from a late fourth-round pick to a potential second-round pick. After a senior season where the SoCal product caught 100 passes for 1275 yards and eleven touchdowns, the Trojan receiver stood out at the Senior Bowl and had a great showing at the scouting combine.

The Cowboys have taken notice of Pittman’s rise as they talked with him at the senior bowl and they formally interviewed him at the scouting combine. After once looking like a later pick, it seems the Cowboys will need to use a premium pick on the 6-foot-4, 220-pound wideout. Personally, I like the idea.

Pittman saw many snaps on the outside, but also took some snaps in the slot. For a big guy, he is a very fluid athlete and it showed in his 3-cone drill where he completed it in 6.96 seconds. (One of the fastest times at the combine) The way he changes direction is pretty unique for a guy that big.

He can run the entire route tree. Especially in his last year with the Trojans, he was asked to run everything in the route tree. He showed the consistent ability to get open no matter the coverage. The only concern is it took a while for routes to develop the deeper he got.

He also has everything you would typically expect of a big target. He can high point the ball and shows the body control and strong hands you want to see from someone of his stature. He will out jump everyone on the field for the ball; he just has to make sure he doesn’t push off. He got caught a few times and was penalized accordingly.

Pittman Jr would make for a fun addition to the team. With Amari Cooper’s versatility, the Cowboys would have three receivers of a bigger build to line up anywhere on the field. Mismatches can be exploited and passing touchdowns in the red zone can once again become popular as Pittman Jr can be a redzone threat similar to Cowboys All-Time touchdown leader Dez Bryant.
