Round 3 – Pick 82

Willie Gay – LB – Mississippi St.

There were not really any wide receivers here and while K’von Wallace at safety was an option, another third round pick coming allowed the Cowboys to take BPA which was Gay. Linebacker depth is a need with the health of Lee, LVE, and Jaylon always questioned. Gay could be a steal at this point in the draft.

The issue with Gay is he served several suspensions at college but none so bad he was removed from the team. There will be some character issues teams will have and that should drop him some in the draft. He has talent to go in the first two rounds, but the questions could cause teams to pass for more of a sure thing. He is really explosive and has a great tackling radius. He will need some time to develop but all the tools are there to make him the MIKE linebacker.

He should be able to get playing time in certain packages and would be great against the run or in coverage. He will instantly be on special teams as well as he learns more nuance to his game to be an every down player. His upside is so high and athletic ability strong enough to be a replacement to Lee as early as next season.
