Round 2, Pick 34

CB,  A.J. Terrell

Clemson

The Dallas Cowboys are being linked to A.J. Terrell more and more often by the draft community these days. Terrell, widely considered a Day 2 pick just a few weeks ago, is getting some buzz in the first round and could realistically fall anywhere in that jumbled mess between CB3-CB8 this year.

It’s possible the Dallas Cowboys are scouting him so they can grab him at Pick 17, but I refuse to accept that. Terrell is an attractive player with nice traits but the difference between him and the next five is marginal, and frankly, he’s at the lower end of that grouping (I have Jeff Gadney, Jaylon Johnson, Kristian Fulton, and Travon Diggs all higher than him).

In this scenario, Gladney, Fulton, and Johnson are all off the board in the first round. And between Diggs and Terrell, I have the Dallas Cowboys going A.J. Terrell (again, I’m predicting what Dallas would do, not what I want to do).

On paper, Terrell looks like a good player to bring in as a future CB1. He’s 6-foot-1, 190lbs with top-notch athleticism, good speed, fluid hips, good change-or-direction, and polished play. Why would he fall to the second day?

For as good as Terrell’s been throughout his career at Clemson, his performance in the National Championship is hard to forget. Used and abused, Terrell was exposed against Ja’Marr Chase. The question at hand is – was that just a fluke performance against NFL talent or was it a sign of things to come when every week is against NFL talent? Rubbing the Rock talks about it here

Again, many are making the case that Terrell is a realistic option at Pick 17. But considering the Cowboys have been in contact with him, Fulton, Gladney, and Diggs, I’m betting they’re willing to take any of the three and are planning to drop back and see who falls.
