5 Dallas Cowboys who’ve become expendable since the NFL Draft
By Reid Hanson
With the NFL Draft now complete, the Dallas Cowboys have a handful of fringe players who are now expendable. Here are five current players who may have just been replaced
Fringe roster guys are players the truest of Dallas Cowboys fans find themselves unreasonably interested in. If things go as expected, their roles are minimal. But things rarely go smoothly in the NFL and often times it is how teams fill holes that separate the pretenders from the contenders.
Based on the Dallas Cowboys draft we’ve identified five players who may have just become expendable. We start with the all-important QB2
QB, Cooper Rush
Age: 26
Make no mistake, Cooper Rush is still the favorite to win the QB2 spot, but there are two big things working against Cooper Rush right now:
- He’ll be a free agent in 2021.
- He’s a product of the old regime
Mike McCarthy is widely regarded as a QB guru. While he’s happy to inherit a franchise talent like Dak Prescott, he likely has the itch for a pet project of his own. 7th round pick Ben DiNucci could be that pet project.
Any effort put into Cooper Rush will walk right out the door in free agency next season, making DiNucci the better investment. It’s not like Cooper Rush has a lot of skins on the wall either. Dak Prescott is one of the most durable QBs in the NFL, meaning Rush has had basically no opportunity for real experience. Cutting him isn’t letting go of a proven veteran, it’s just swapping one unknown for another.
