5 Dallas Cowboys who’ve become expendable since the NFL Draft
By Reid Hanson
DE, Joe Jackson
Age: 23
Joe Jackson was a pleasant surprise for the Dallas Cowboys last season. The 165th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft came into the NFL without much explosion or athleticism to his game, but he made up for it in reach and active hands.
Dallas was loaded at DE last season and Jackson was a long-shot to make the team, but when the time came for tough decisions to be made, it was former first round pick Taco Charlton who got the axe, not Jackson.
With the addition of Rookie DE Bradlee Anea, it’s once again looking like a crowded room in the DE meetings. Tyrone Crawford, Randy Gregory, and Aldon Smith are all expected to come back (fingers crossed) and they’ll join DeMarcus Lawrence and Dorance Armstrong Jr in the ranks. If all five are back in camp, there won’t be room for someone like Jackson when the roster goes down to 53. Especially since the interior line is five deep itself.
CB, C.J. Goodwin
Age: 30
Fans may not have noticed C.J. Goodwin very much but the Dallas Cowboys sure liked him. As one of the best players on a poor special teams, the 6-foot-3 cornerback was game day active player all 16 weeks last season.
He only logged 22 snaps on defense last season and at the age of 30, he’s over the hill for a fringe player. The Dallas Cowboys just added CB Trevon Diggs in the second round, and the ultra-promising Reggie Robinson II in the fourth.
Both rookies are tall boundary cornerbacks who play aggressively. Both are guaranteed roster spots with Chidobe Awuzie, Anthony Brown, and Jourdan Lewis. There just isn’t room for a 30-year-old special teamer on the roster anymore.
There we are. Those are five players who may be on the outside looking in. Who did I miss?
