Dallas Cowboys Jamal Adams Trade: 2020 the perfect time to trade a pick
By Reid Hanson
If the Dallas Cowboys are considering a trade for Jamal Adams the time is now…
The unrest in New York/New Jersey continues between Jamal Adams and the Jets. And now the former sixth overall pick has requested a trade. The Dallas Cowboys, one of seven desirable locations named by him, have a need at safety and have long been interested in acquiring Adams.
If the Dallas Cowboys are ever going to trade for Jamal Adams, the time is now. Sure, getting him on board this summer will give him chance to settle in and acclimate to Mike Nolan’s defense. But most importantly, the cost to acquire him (a first round pick at the very least) has never been less valuable.
The 2021 NFL Draft is going to be a mess
Looking around the professional sports world it’s easy to see what the current COVID-19 pandemic has done to their respective drafts. With amateur sports paused through most of 2020, professional evaluation has been nearly impossible.
This makes player evaluation an absolute nightmare for NFL scouts. And that means the bust rate of first round draft picks will never be higher.
We just witnessed the boondoggle that was the MLB Draft. Not only was the event shortened, but the player evaluations were horrifically incomplete and more speculative than ever before resulting in some surprising picks. The NBA is about to discover the same thing. Like baseball, the college basketball season was cut short from the pandemic. Players we wanted to see more from never got a chance to show. As such, there are far fewer “sure things” than ever before.
Up to this point, the football world has been spared. The college and pro season concluded right about the time COVID-19 started picking up steam.
The 2019 season was unscathed but 2020 won’t be so fortunate. We don’t know exactly how COVID-19 will impact football in 2020, but based on Dr. Fauci’s comment yesterday that “football may not happen this year“, it’s hard to believe things won’t be severely disrupted – at least in the college ranks.

Even if the college season happens in its entirety (which remains in doubt), it’s highly likely multiple universities will be impacted from positive COVID-19 tests. It’s not beyond the realm of possibility to think every team will be impacted in some way. And some rather significantly. This makes player evaluation an absolute nightmare for scouts. And that means the bust rate of first round draft picks will never be higher.
Have you ever seen mock drafts prognosticating BEFORE the football season? The first round is widely different this time of the year than it is in January. That’s why if the Dallas Cowboys are ever going to trade a first round pick away, this is the year to do it.
The Dallas Cowboys inquired about Adams last year but bowed out after hearing the asking price. Six months later, and with a possible training camp holdout looming, that asking price may not be what it once was and the Cowboys may be able to work out a more reasonable deal for the Dallas native.
With the bust rate of first round picks likely to rise in 2021, this is the best possible year for the Dallas Cowboys to trade away their pick.
The Dallas Cowboys can trade away an enormous risk in an unknown climate for a known commodity and All Pro at a position of weakness. This is the year to make a big move.
