Dallas Cowboys: 3 Tight Ends to Target via Free Agency or Trade
By Reid Hanson
Dallas Cowboys TE Option 1
Delanie Walker
Status: Free Agent
Age: 36
The first name that popped into everyone’s mind when Jarwin went down was Delanie Walker. Heck, he’s a guy many Cowboys fans were talking about before Jarwin went down. As mentioned before, the cupboard is bare at the tight end position this year and some veteran depth is always appreciated.
Not so long ago Walker was one of the best TEs in the NFL. From 2013 to 2017 Walker was Pro Football Focus’ sixth rated TE. He was an elite blocker with legit pass-catching skills. Injuries derailed him the past two seasons but when he’s been on the field he’s been top-10.
With that said, Walker is a free agent for a reason. Over the years his body has broken down and his ability to stay on the field is a real concern around the league.
Even still, he doesn’t have the kind of mileage most guys his age have. People forget, he played seven years in San Francisco as a TE2 afterthought. It was only when he went to Tennessee that he broke out on the national stage.
Walker, six-foot-two, 248 lbs, is a the kind of weapon offensive coordinators can get creative with. He can play the traditional inline TE role, he can flex out in the slot, and he line up back as an H-Back or even FB. Even if he can’t claim the TE1 spot, it stands to reason he’d still be a useful tool on the 2020 Cowboys.
