The Dallas Cowboys should be calling the New York Jets enquiring about the price for former first-round pick Quinnen Williams.

This season has gone exactly to plan, which is why I am sitting here telling you the Dallas Cowboys should be running up the charges on the New York Jets phone bill. (Remember when we paid our phone bills depending on the number of minutes we used? Good times)

However, even if the veteran additions on the defensive line paid off this season, I’d feel strongly in favor of Dallas trying to do everything to grab Williams. It isn’t often a former first-round pick is on the trade block so early in his career and for such a relatively low price. We have the Jets’ dysfunction to thank for this.

It has been discussed on numerous that making a trade for a player here and there will ultimately do very little for a team with a lot of needs defensively. That said, a trade for Quinnen Williams doesn’t have the same effect as signing Earl Thomas or trading for Justin Reid.

Williams is turning 23 years old in December and will be on his rookie contract for at least another two seasons after the 2020 season. In addition, Williams plays a universally recognized position in defensive tackle; as we’ve seen in the past really good defensive linemen can be game wreckers.

Throw in that he’s a former top-5 pick with a high athletic ceiling and a very likable personality, and if anything it really begs to question why the Jets are ready to move on from the former Crimson Tide defensive tackle.

Today, I’ll try to make the case for why the Cowboys should and shouldn’t trade for Williams and what they should be willing to give. Spoiler: he’s pretty good so expect at least a day 2 pick.
