Dallas Cowboys Complete 7-round Mock Draft: Fixing the trenches
By Reid Hanson
Dallas Cowboys Mock Draft
Round 4, Pick 136
EDGE Patrick Johnson
Tulane
Patrick Johnson is beast around the edge. He’s fast with a quick first step and can bend around to make problems for offensive tackles. He has a mix of speed and strength to offer a variety of attacks including some counter moves.
At this point he looks like he’s best in a 2-point stance in the NFL where he can flex out wide and just focus on the pass rush. That can be in a 3-4 or in Quinn’s system that uses a LEO as a wide rusher on the line.
Round 5 Pick 174
LB/EDGE Chris Rumph II
Duke
We picked an edge player in the second round when we drafted Patrick Jones II. We did it again just a pick ago with Patrick Johnson. So do we need another edge player here? At 6-foot-3 225lbs Chris Rumph II played multiple role for Duke – including off-ball linebacker.
Dallas, in need of fresh blood to groom in the second level (I think 2021 will be the last year for Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch), will grab this versatile player and use him a variety of ways: He’s explosive, He’s good inside and in the open field, and he’s smart and long enough to drop into Cover 3 zone Dan Quinn uses often. He can blitz up the middle or stunt around the edge.
