Dallas Cowboys: Round 3

Defensive Tackle – Tommy Togiai – Ohio State

There was an almost split between Togiai and cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu, with the last run of the mock giving Togiai the nod. The Dallas Cowboys need a stout run defender who can push the middle of the line and stop the run, enter Togiai. A true 1-tech defensive tackle could be a huge boon to the Cowboys’ defense.

Togiai is a stout defender who rarely gets pushed off the line and if he had an explosive first step he would be a first two round guy. However, if a guard or center is a little flat footed, Togiai can and will get through him quickly. His hands are outstanding and he plays with a great base at the point of attack. He uses a surprising mixture of finesse and power against the run and has no trouble locating the ball and attacking it. He can move down the line well and can turn on a dime for a man his size.

Togiai isn’t the tallest nor is he the best in pass-rushing, but he has all the skills to be a single gap run defender who can push the pocket enough to worry a passer. His reach won’t be ideal, but uses his finesse to overcome this and will need to refine himself a little more at the next level. He would open up gaps, stop the run, and that is exactly what the Cowboys need.
