Dallas Cowboys 7-Round Mock Draft: Post Senior Bowl Edition
Dallas Cowboys: Round 5
Defensive End – Shaka Toney – Penn State
Another name from my first mock pops up with Shaka Toney. The next most picked player was wide receiver Semi Fehoko, but Toney was Best Player Available. The Cowboys need more pass rush from their defensive line and Toney would be a rotational piece to do just that. He provides depth and situational plug and play right away.
Toney has the bend you love to see from an edge player and his first step is something that can not be taught. He has the speed to cause problems for bigger offensive tackles and has a good chop to get the hands off him when engaged. He plays in space well and if asked to drop into coverage is not a liability.
Toney will need to add some size if he wants to be a three-down defensive end and set an edge in the run game. The goal will be keeping Toney in space and using his speed instead of bull-rushing to push the pocket from the edge. He will help on stretch runs, but won’t be a ton of help in power rushing defending.
