Dallas Cowboys Round Four

Jonathon Cooper – Defensive End – Ohio State

There were several directions to go here with edge, wide receiver, and corner, but the stack of edge players was always near the top of the board fairly often. The choice in edge usually came down between Cooper and Rashad Weaver and I gave Cooper the nod due to the 2019 knee injury of Weaver. Cooper might also be a little bit better of a fit, which helps between the two.

Cooper is a pass rush specialist at this point, but he does it really well. He gets low to the ground at the snap and uses his speed and powerful hands to get around tackles. While he doesn’t have the best bend around the corner, he has shown traits that lead to believe he is almost there with some work. His motor is relentless and it shows up play after play.

Cooper is not a defensive end that you want to set the edge and hold it, instead, you want him shooting gaps against the run. If he is asked to sit and wait, bigger tackles can get inside him and push him off the spot. The same issue shows up if he doesn’t get low enough around the corner, but as before he has shown he can do it from time to time.

Other picks: Sage Surratt and Rodarius Williams
