Round Two – Pick 44 – Asante Samuel – Cornerback – Florida State

With the Cowboys picking Pitts, the focus immediately shifts to corner. I decided not to give up my second and a third to move back into the first and let pick 44 fall to me. Kelvin Joseph went off the board right before I picked, Farley and Stokes were also gone. That left Asante Samuel and Aaron Robinson as the two corner choices. Safety was a huge reach as the top guys were gone.

Samuel is a quick and agile corner who can stick with any of the faster receivers in the NFL. He has really good ball skills, but it wasn’t until 2020 that those skills really started turning into interceptions. He backpedals and turns his hip smoothly and stays on the hip of the receiver well. He tracks the ball and drives on it well, all while playing with some attitude and swagger. He is excellent in man coverage.

The downside is Samuel is a little smaller than some teams like at only 5’10” which shows up at times in jump ball situations, although he will contend. Sometimes he will try to bait quarterbacks a little too much and can give up some underneath throws, but he has the speed to overcome this with some work.
