Round Two – Pick 63 – Jamar Johnson – Safety – Indiana (Trade Pick 75, Pick 227, and 2022 5th round)

Deciding to move back up into the second seemed like the smart move as Johnson was falling. Johnson offers something the Cowboys have needed, a true centerfield safety who makes plays on the ball. While he will need to work on run support, a ball hawk in the secondary who can also easily play in the slot when needed would be a huge boost to the defense.

Johnson has the range, speed, and hands to make teams pay for even the smallest misthrown ball. With thirteen interceptions over the last two years, he is the true definition of a ballhawk. He can cover well in man coverage and does well to track the ball and stay on the hip of receivers. He is fantastic at being able to watch the eyes of the quarterback and stay in coverage throughout routes. When he blitzes Johnson can bring a strong pop when he hits someone.

The downside to Johnson is at times he isn’t the surest player against the run. When he wants to bring it, he is solid, but it is really inconsistent. He is more of a shoulder tackler against the run than wrapping up and bring the ball carrier down. He did get ejected for throwing a punch in-game
