Round Four – Pick 138 – Talanoa Hufanga – Safety – USC

Going for a little bit of a boom or bust player at pick 138 seemed to fit the Cowboys and Hufanga was also one of the highest-rated players on the board. Double-dipping at safety might be something the Cowboys could think of doing if Damonte Kazee’s injury is a little more serious than we all know. While Hufanga has some injury concerns his 2020 was clean and helped his case.

Hufanga is one of those safeties that uses his intelligence and technique to play the position well. He sees the play and reacts well, coming down to help against the run and takes really good routes to the ball carrier. When he gets his hands on the ball carrier he does well to wrap up quickly and has times where his power knocks the ball out. Really good in zone coverage and can play close to the line when asked.

Hufanga does have some shoulder concerns that will have to be checked out medically. He isn’t the fastest player and may not have the range to play single high or a lot of man coverage. Sometimes will get hung on a block and will struggle to disengage, but his 2020 looked better. If his medicals check out, he has the building blocks to be a good safety with some work.
