The Dallas Cowboys trade Pick 75 and 227 to Atlanta for Pick 68.

Round 3, Pick 68

Prediction: Marvin Wilson, DT

Stop me if you’ve heard this one: the Dallas Cowboys need better defensive tackles and will use Day 2 to do it. It’s been true the past two seasons, and here in 2021, it will be true again.

There’s been a quiet buzz around Florida State defensive tackle Marvin Wilson at The Star of late. While that could be a smokescreen designed to distract from the real plan, it’s a move that’s on brand and completely within their nature.

Most online big boards have Wilson slotted as a late third/early fourth guy, others have him as a second round player. I think the Dallas Cowboys are of the latter group (hence, the trade up).

Before the 2020 season, Marvin Wilson was the hottest DT prospect in the land. The former 5-star recruit had back to back dominant seasons at FSU and looked like a first round pick here in 2021. Then his 2020 season happened.

Playing injured and out of position, Wilson regressed on film. The 6-foot-3, 303 lbs, Wilson was asked to play 5-tech, and like a lot of FSU’s defensive players, struggled playing in the new defense. But Wilson won’t be asked to play 5-tech in Dallas. He’ll play the position he utterly dominated, and that’s DT.

The 2021 NFL Draft class is very weak at the DT position, but Wilson has the potential to be the best. If he plays like he did in 2018 and 2019, he’s going to be a star in the pros. My feeling is that the Dallas Cowboys believe that to be true and will make him a Day 2 pick (even as early as Pick 44).
