The Dallas Cowboys trade pick 99 and 192 for pick 86
Round 3, Pick 86
Prediction: Pete Werner, LB
The Dallas Cowboys have yet to address the linebacker position and I don’t expect that to go on much longer. Dallas doesn’t have immediate needs at linebacker since Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch are both expected to be back here in 2021, but beyond this season, both could be gone.
That’s why linebacker doesn’t jump out as need on paper, but in reality it’s something that should be addressed. The Dallas Cowboys coaching brain-trust was at Ohio State’s Pro Day and they spent a lot of time looking at the linebackers.
I assume Baron Browning was the top target they were scouting but also think Pete Werner and Justin Hilliard were in play as options as well. Pete Werner is the kind of old school linebacker Dallas loves.
Pete Werner is a LB prospect in the 2021 draft class. He scored a 9.49 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 110 out of 2118 LB from 1987 to 2021.

He’s not a high ceiling guy which is why he’s available in the third round, but he’s well rounded and has 4-down ability. He needs to get better in coverage but he possesses the skills and work ethic so the concern isn’t great.
In Year 1 I see Werner as a SAM but he projects long-term as a WILL.
