Round Four – Pick 138 – Patrick Jones II – Defensive End – Pittsburgh

One of the smaller needs the Cowboys have that not a lot of people are talking about is defensive end depth. With Aldon Smith departing and the unknown of Bradlee Anae, the position is a little thin. Jones was often the best player available so he was a smart pick here. Cameron Sample was another name, but Jones might be a little closer to what the Cowboys want.

Jones has a really good burst off the line and explodes upfield quickly. His first punch is really impactful which helps him set an edge against the run, while inconsistent, he does well to set it. His pass-rush flashes when asked to stunt and it is perfect for his style of play. One of the smarter players on Pittsburgh, he was named a team captain and led the team in tackles for loss and sacks.

Consistency is an issue with Jones, and it shows when asked to pass rush using more technique than straight-line speed. This also shows up as his snap anticipation goes up and down, but he has gotten better over his time in Pittsburgh. If can learn to play more controlled and refine his technique is could be a steal in a few short years.
