Dallas Stars’ Three NHL Caliber Goaltenders
The Dallas Stars have a good problem when it comes to their goalies. Anton Khudobin and Ben Bishop have been one of the top goaltending duos in the NHL. When both healthy, they fed off one another and racked up some of the best numbers in the league.
When Bishop missed games, which was often, Khudobin filled in extremely well. Khudobin was thrown into his first full starting role in the 2020 playoffs and brought Dallas to the Stanley Cup Final. With Bishop missing all of the 2021 season, rookie Jake Oettinger was thrown into the fold earlier than the organization hoped.
It was planned that Oettinger would get a year or two in the AHL before coming up to the NHL full time. The 21-year-old outperformed his expectations this season and was the Stars’ best goalie for most of the year. He finished every game that he started and solidified the net when Khudobin was pulled.
Now, Bishop is expected to be fully healthy next season and Oettinger seems to be overqualified for a season in the AHL. Dallas has some decisions to make in terms of handling their three NHL-caliber goaltenders. Maybe the Seattle Kraken can help them out.
