Dallas Cowboys Free Agents to Target

No. 2: Steven Nelson, CB

For all the same reasons as Sherman, Steven Nelson should be considered as well. The Eagles have been trying to sign him this offseason to no avail. Their low-ball offers aren’t going well and Dallas could easily get a deal made right now without breaking the bank.

Nelson was a cap casualty of the Steelers this offseason but remains one of the most underrated CBs in the NFL. Rated by PFF as the 13th best CB entering the 2021 season, Nelson is a steal on the market right now. While he’s not a Cover 3 expert like Sherman is, he’s younger and can play both man and zone with proficiency.

And at age 28, he’s got a lot left in the tank making him my favorite player on this list.

No. 3 Gareon Conley, CB

Notice a trend here? The last cornerback on this list is the former first round pick, Gareon Conley. At just 26-years-old, Conley is the youngest free agent on the list and possibly the only player who is still in his prime. Conley didn’t play at all in 2020 and in the seasons he has played, he’s been mediocre.

But if the Dallas Cowboys want to bring in someone who can thrive in man coverage, Conley is their man. Conley is graded in the 69th percentile when in single coverage and when targeted he’s forced incompletions over 22 percent of the time (second best in NFL since 2017). That’s nothing to scoff at and something to consider.
