Dak Prescott, Garrett Gilbert

Dallas fans were hit with a scare when starting quarterback Dak Prescott was seen at practice standing on the sideline before running into the locker room. Fears were put to rest when reports were he suffered a latissimus strain on his throwing shoulder, but the thought of Garrett Gilbert, Ben DiNucci, and Cooper Rush handling the rest of the QB reps only brought a greater level of discomfort.

Few days have passed and the only quarterback showing anything positive is former Texas and SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert. On Thursday, Gilbert threw three touchdowns in situational team drills as the first-team QB; a stark contrast from the five interceptions Gilbert, Ben DiNucci, and Cooper Rush threw on Wednesday’s practice after Prescott was forced to sit out.

While Gilbert has recovered, second-year sensation Ben DiNucci has seemingly been unable to complete a pass. This news is incredibly devastating for the countless fans that enjoyed the Ben DiNucci legend. As a member of the Ben DiNucci hype train myself, this is an incredibly sour moment for the movement, but perhaps the beauty in the legend of “Gucci DiNucci” is that we never get to really see him play a regular-season game in a Dallas Cowboys uniform. We can go to sleep knowing the great Michael Irvin made a fool of himself on NFL Network for the James Madison Duke.

As for Cooper Rush, it seems to be a lot of the same. After Rush came on hot during the 2017 preseason, he hasn’t been able to recreate any of the success from that four-week span thus far in his career. It might be time for the team to call it quits for good this time.

If the rest of the training camp and the preseason shape up as such, having two quarterbacks on the roster is the only logical move. DiNucci would likely clear waivers so if the team wanted him to stay on the practice squad he could have a home there. With Rush’s experience, that opportunity doesn’t exist for him.

If something bad were to happen to either Prescott or Gilbert, Blake Bortles is back on the market. Just saying…
