The Dallas Cowboys Sack Leader

The expectation is that it will either be Randy Gregory or DeMarcus Lawrence. These two are the best defensive linemen on the team and both are due for a double-digit sack season. With Gregory on the cusp of playing his first full season ever, he projects to have a better chance at crossing the double-digit sack threshold with an extra game at disposal.

These two, rightfully, have their claim to fame but I can’t help but think the sack leader might not be an edge rusher. The team drafted Micah Parsons and Osa Odighizuwa, both of whom display good motor and athletic ability to get after the pass rusher. Dan Quinn has made it evident that he’s willing to rush Micah Parsons from multiple alignments and Odighizuwa’s odd body shape gives him the ability to line up anywhere between the tackles given the down and distance.

Dorance Armstrong came along very nicely this preseason alongside stand-up edge rusher Bradlee Anae.  Let’s not forget Tarell Basham was a key signing for this defensive line especially since he came off a career year.

The Cowboys genuinely have good EDGE/OLB depth which means whoever lines up opposite of DeMarcus Lawrence can likely make a play on the quarterback.

If you held up a potentially life-threatening object to my face and asked me which darkhorse candidate would lead the team in sacks, with hesitation I’d tell you… Dorance Armstrong.

So yeah… my “bold” prediction here is that the Dallas Cowboys sacks leader for the 2021 season will be either Randy Gregory or Dorance Armstrong. This answer might seem like a cop-out, but DeMarcus Lawrence is the only player on the active defensive line that has led the team in sacks before. The name at the top this season will likely be an unfamiliar face.

If it’s any consolation, Benson Mayowa led the team with 6 sacks in 2016. Literally anything can happen with this depth.
