The Dallas Mavericks, never ones to shy away from headlines, are trending once again. While the current hot streak is getting its press, and Luke Doncic’s triple-double record has gained international notoriety, it’s the Myles Turner trade rumors that are getting the most buzz these days.

By most accounts, the Dallas Mavericks are humming right now. Winners of their last six, the Mavs are on their longest winning streak since 2016. What’s even more impressive than the winning streak is how they’re playing.

The Mavs are bought into Jason Kidd’s system. This isn’t just a case of “getting hot” and players playing great. This is a collection of role players, together with the stars, performing at defensive high levels in multiple lineups and rotations. Everyone just seems to fit in a variety of ways.

But opportunity rarely strikes at the perfect time and just because the Dallas Mavericks are rolling doesn’t mean everyone in the NBA is sitting fat and happy. The Indiana Pacers are in a bit of a tear-down mode right now. They are unloading and rebuilding and couldn’t care less about how the timing fits for the Mavs.

So here we are, talking about trading away players at a time when our players are performing well. Distasteful? Sure, but it’s the nature of the beast.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania recently dished on all the top rumors circulating the league right now, and wouldn’t you know it? He said the Dallas Mavericks are one of four teams who have expressed interest in the 25-year-old center.

Under contract through next season, Turner is more than a one-season rental. With a financial commitment of $18 million, he’s not cheap, but he’s not cost prohibitive either.

The Dallas Mavericks, a franchise that’s not exactly bubbling over with tradeable assets, should be able to offer suitable compensation to acquire someone like Turner. The question is: what will it cost and is that an upgrade?

Would it be a big upgrade for the Dallas Mavericks if they added Myles Turner in a trade?

While the interest in a deal is confirmed, the compensation is mostly speculation. It’s safe to say Kristaps Porzingis is off the table since his value is extremely low and neither he nor Rick Carlisle seem like they are dying for a reunion.

Jalen Brunson is the Mavs most tradable asset. He’s in the midst of a breakout season and most teams would kill to add a creator like him to their roster. The problem is the Mavs also need him. In fact, they need him more than they need a new rim protector so a trade like this would be borrowing from Peter to pay Paul, so to speak. And I’d argue the team would have taken a step back in doing so.

With that said, Brunson is on an expiring deal and trading him for something before losing him for nothing is a pretty sound strategy. This is why these trade conversations are so tricky to navigate.

Tim Hardaway would be a nice piece to send off. Josh Green has built some value too. Combining a couple players and a pick may be the best way to make a deal work but it really depends on the combination before we can determine whether or not it upgrades the Mavs.

The Mavs success looks sustainable, but that doesn’t mean they should stand pat. They really need to pull off a couple mid-season trades this year and adding a rim protector and secondary creator is one of the best ways to do it.

We’ll be monitoring this rumor as the season progresses but right now it’s a very attractive proposition that shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg to get done.
