Players the Dallas Cowboys must re-sign right now

Randy Gregory, DE

Age: 29

Randy Gregory seems to be headlining every Cowboys’ fans “Must Re-sign List” this winter and for good reason: Gregory has developed into one of the most feared and efficient pass rushers in the NFL these days.

With the league’s archaic substance abuse policy in the rearview mirror, concerns of his availability are finally put to rest. At last Randy Gregory gets to be judged by his play rather than his mental health practices.

The sack column says Randy only has six sacks on the season, but a deeper dive reveals he’s an extremely efficient pass-rusher who produced pressure on a regular basis and has improved as a run-stopper to boot. In other words: he’s an elite play-maker

Given the history of suspensions, the mileage is low on Gregory. He’s only played 50 career games as a pro and his best and most productive football appears to be yet to come. But he’s in his physical prime now and will be looking to cash in on what will likely be his one big contract. Because of that it might be presumptuous to think he’ll give Dallas a home team discount just because they stood by him.

But Randy wants to be in Dallas and the Cowboys want to keep him a Cowboy. That’s why I think this deal gets done. The only question is for how much.

I fully expect Randy Gregory to build on his value in the postseason. Assuming the Dallas Cowboys advance deep (which we do) Randy is going to gain quite the notoriety on the national stage. If Dallas knows they’re going to sign him, and Randy knows he’s going to sign, then let’s get this done right now and send him into the postseason with an extra boost of confidence.
