Dallas Cowboys Draft Need No.3

Safety

Pointing out the Dallas Cowboys needs at the safety position has become an annual endeavor. A position Dallas chooses to neglect and fill with the most budget-friendly way possible, extends from free agent dollars to draft pick capital.

Still, it’s a bona fide need and we’re not going to ignore it just because Dallas chooses to so often.

Dallas Cowboys free agent  SAF: Damontae Kazee, Jayron Kearse, Malik Hooker

Dallas has some big-time names hitting free agency from the safety position. Kazee, Kearse and Hooker all signed one-year prove-it deals and it seems one of them really did prove it. I expect the Dallas Cowboys to retain Jayron Kearse this winter. Kearse was a solid player, team leader, and coach’s favorite. He can play a SS/LB hybrid role and offers a ton of versatility to this defense.

Hooker and Kazee both proved their health (which was a big question) but neither really jumped out on film. It’s possible either could come back on another cheap deal but the money and expectations would have to be right.

With Kearse and Donovan Wilson as my top-2 safeties, the Dallas Cowboys need to find a centerfielder type to play deep safety. They need someone to develop quickly because there aren’t a ton of options waiting in the wings on this team.

Note to self: When was the last time I did a Tre Boston article?
