Free agent safeties for the Dallas Cowboys

Marcus Williams

Age: 25

Over the past few seasons Marcus Williams has established himself as one of the best young safeties in the game. The New Orleans free safety has been a coverage dynamo the past few years, ranking in PFF’s top-10 in four out of the last five seasons.

Consistency at safety is extremely hard to achieve nowadays, so the fact that Williams has been so consistently reliable in centerfield speaks volumes about his intelligence and discipline as a player.

The Dallas Cowboys currently employ Damontae Kazee as their top free safety and could use a significant upgrade to the underwhelming Kazee. But such a move is going to cost them, with Spotrac estimating Williams to cost $15 million per season to sign.

Marcus Maye

Age: 27

For the past two seasons we’ve spent time breaking down Marcus Maye’s game and making a case for why the Dallas Cowboys should try to trade for the former New York Jets safety. Maye has a diverse skillset that allows him to line up deep or in the box.

While there were some fluctuations in his game this past season, he’s been a strong performer throughout most of his career and seems to be just entering his prime. This Marcus isn’t nearly as dynamic as the one discussed above but he’s a good fit for a variety of schemes and will come at a slightly lower cost.
