Dallas Cowboys search for WR3

Zay Jones

Age: 26

The 6-foot-2, 200lb receiver from Dallas, TX is coming off a strong campaign with the Raiders. His 47 catches for 546 yards, one touchdown, and 67.1% catch percentage are the second best totals of his career (despite only playing seven games). And his 7.8 yards per target in 2021 is his best.

Zay Jones enters free agency as a fairly respected entity. A field stretcher with sure hands and consistent play, Jones is playing the best ball of his career. How that translates into a new contract is tough to tell. As mentioned earlier, he only played seven games last season so his “breakout” was a fairly small sample size.

PFN Estimates he’ll garner between $5-6 million per year on a two-year deal. That makes him very affordable to the Dallas Cowboys who are looking to replace their downfield threat in Gallup. Jones’ average depth of target last season was 14.0 yards, indicating he’s quite comfortable operating downfield.

Jones, a former East Carolina and Senior Bowl standout should be well known to the Dallas Cowboys scouting department. His drop rate of 3.66 in college was second best in FBS in 2016, and his sure handedness continued in the pros with him only clocking one season with a drop percentage above 2.9%.

His fit on the Dallas Cowboys would be fairly seamless considering he’s also used to playing a big role in the screen game (whether we like to admit it or not, Dallas loves WR screens). Jones isn’t the greatest WR in this free agent class but he may be one of the better bargains and one of the cleanest fits for a team like Dallas.
