Round Five – Smoke Monday – Safety – Auburn

There are some really good safeties in this draft, and there are a few who could be first round picks for the Cowboys. However, knowing the history of this team and the safety position, it would surprise many if they went safety early. The team should re-sign Jayron Kearse, but will still need help at safety, especially if they do not also retain Malik Hooker.

Monday is more like Jayron Kearse than he is Malik Hooker. Monday can play the safety/linebacker hybrid spot that Dan Quinn loves to have on the roster. With the unknown at the position, Monday can bring some flexibility with his coverage ability and his ability to play the run in the box. He is a physical type safety who wants to hunt for the football in both the passing and running game.

Smoke will need help containing his aggressiveness as sometimes he will allow a big play or overpursue. Monday will have to learn when and when not to be aggressive in the passing game. He will sometimes process the play a little slow, but his athleticism helps cover some of the issues.
