Dallas Cowboys 7-Round Mock Draft Nightmare Scenario

Round 2, Pick 56

WR Alec Pierce

Cincinnati

Alec Pierce is a great prospect who just lit it up at the NFL Combine, but this is a nightmare scenario for the Cowboys for two reasons:

  1. Because he’s drafted to fill another self-induced need.
  2. And because he comes as another downgrade

Remember from the explanation above, we’re operating this Dallas Cowboys 7-round mock draft under the parameters of Amari Cooper being a salary cap casualty (a likelihood) and Michael Gallup not getting re-signed (a possibility). Without two of their top-3 WRs returning, the Cowboys will feel compelled to address the receiver position early in the draft.

Hence, the self-imposed “need.”

Even if Dallas keeps Gallup and Cedrick and only lets Amari leave, they are going to feel they must reach for need at WR with a top-100 pick.

this isn’t about disparaging the prospects but rather attacking the methodology and consequences of the Dallas Cowboys miserly actions

Alec Pierce is a great prospect. Again, this isn’t about disparaging the prospects but rather attacking the methodology and consequences of the Dallas Cowboys miserly actions. At 6-foot-3 , 2013lbs. Piece is just the type of WR Dallas loves. He’s a big-bodied X who projects perfectly into Amari’s X spot he’s vacating.

But expecting him (or anyone) to pick up where Amari left off in his first season is an enormously risky proposition. And when the NFC is as open as it appears to be this coming season, Dallas can’t afford to mail in the 2022 season as they develop and integrate their draft picks.

Amari is an extremely polished and crisp WR. Replacing him with someone as raw as Pierce is not an easy transition.  But Dallas feels compelled to fill Amari Cooper’s role with a prototypical X-type receiver and they may come to regret it. Especially  when more polished WR prospects are passed over just because they can’t play the X.
