Dallas Cowboys Round Five – Chase Lucas – Cornerback – Arizona State

There are still a lot of unknowns surrounding the cornerback position for the Dallas Cowboys. With Anthony Brown‘s future still a little up in the air and  Maurice Canady this could be the pick. And as Amy Trask says, you can never have enough corners, so Lucas helps possibly make the decision on Brown easier, or at least a little easier. With an ability to play inside and outside he offers the versatility they love, but is best suited for the slot.

FYI: Yusuf Corker, the safety, was the next most often picked player.

Lucas has a nose for the ball and tracks it in the air really well. With his ability to play both man and zone coverage, Lucas offers versatility without having to come off the field in up-tempo situations. He stays on the hip and uses good agility and speed to keep up with the faster and smaller slot receivers.

Lucas will sometimes bite trying to go for an interception, but his speed and balance help him recover quickly. He is not a corner that will pop a receiver or running back and tends to drag players down allowing for hidden yards. He could be a third corner faster than some will believe, but will need some work with strength and seeing the game at the next level.
