Dallas Cowboys Round Five – Mike Rose – Linebacker – Iowa State

I thought about linebacker earlier than this, but the way the draft was falling and how some positions were getting runs, I decided to wait and Rose was available which is a small steal, as I think he could go late in the fourth. With depth needed at linebacker, Rose fills some needs but also could help with the flexibility of using Micah Parsons to rush a bit more.

Rose has good length and size for the position with good footwork and the ability to work through traffic. He sees the play and blocking scheme before the ball is snapped at times which helps him diagnose and react to make up for average speed for the position. He loves to fill gaps and attack the running game and loves to be in the box. He can cover in zones but will struggle a little the longer a route takes.

Rose will need to work on his pad level which has led to some broken tackles, but a small fix should help his game immensely. Sometimes, in short spaces will sometimes run into blocks and needs to figure out his angles a little better. Mostly a Mike linebacker, which helps free up Parsons at times, but will need to work on man coverage to be a more complete linebacker.
