The Dallas Cowboys ave been the only team in DFW since 1963, when the Kansas City Chiefs moved. Since that time other Texas teams have come and gone, but the Cowboys have stayed. Now considered the most valuable franchise in the world, the Cowboys, and specifically the Jones family, have made sure the Cowboys are alone in their share of Texas. Recently, the story goes Jerry Jones prevented a team being in San Antonio.

So, in case you missed it, the Mayor of Dallas, Eric Johnson, tweeted out that Dallas should have a second team.

Beyond the simple logistics of where the stadium would be built, there are a multitude of reasons why it won’t happen. Yes, there are some fans that would move teams simply to “show” something to the Jones family.

No Mayor Johnson, there does not need to be a second team, nor would the Jones family allow it. The Dallas Cowboys are the team of DFW.

Before we get into the reasons why this shouldn’t or won’t happen, the NFL would either have to expand or have a team looking to move. The NFL will probably not be expanding any time soon, so the other option would be a team relocation. It seems the NFL is interested internationally, so that would probably be the first option for the league.

The first reason was mentioned above, the Jones family would never let a second team. Make no mistake the Cowboys are an absolute cash cow for the Jones family. The prestige, money, and power that has come with owning the Dallas Cowboys have provided the family with opportunity and leverage. For those wanting new ownership, it could be a very long time before that happens.

Another reason it won’t happen is taxpayer dollars for a second stadium. AT&T stadium cost taxpayers $444 million, a second stadium would add a ton of tax money to local residents, some left Arlington due to the rising cost.

Moving a stadium to South Dallas would cost money that many would not want to pay. Sure, it would add value potentially for tourism, but it would take time and money. But the Jones family would not allow a second team to share their stadium, so it would have to be a second.

Beyond these two reasons, due to the following of the Cowboys it would be hard to pull fans. Sure, some would leave the Cowboys simply because they are tired of the Cowboys ownership, and some fans would root for two teams, but pulling from a loyal fanbase is difficult at best. Since the Cowboys are located in the middle of DFW (the stadium, the headquarters are in Frisco), trying to pull fans from Dallas would be harder since the tourist attraction that is AT&T is fairly easily to access.

So, no Mayor Johnson, DFW doesn’t need a second team. Look at the teams in Las Angeles and New York are doing. One in each city is the talk of the town, the others, punchlines in the NFL. Maybe, focus on other things, a second team in DFW is not the answer, nor did you get the answers you wanted when you posted on Twitter.
